Google is the most popular search engine on the internet. Almost everyone uses it for any object or topic that they need to search for. From searching websites, businesses, products, services, maps or people, locally or globally, everything converges on Google.
But as a website or blog owner, what can I do so Google takes me into account in its search results? The answer is SEO (search engine optimization). SEO is the process of improving a website’s visibility when a search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, Ask or Bing, is sorting through the all the information available to it.
The SEO strategies are based on understanding how the search engines work and altering your website to ensure it is best suited for the strategies. There are many ways to optimize a website, some of them more complex than others with code editing involved. SEO experts can change and improve a website’s structure and edit the meta tags which increases the possibilities of being higher on the search results. However, there are also some actions that a user with no technical background can take to improve a website’s visibility.
One of the main recommendations is to identify the words that someone would use in the search for your activity or business. These are the keywords that should be used throughout all site content from pages to post titles to photo captions and throughout all text. Since these keywords are the main source of data a search engine has to match a search to your site, you will want your site to reflect what customers are looking for.
The keywords should be descriptive and as specific as possible. For example, if you are a hair salon and spa you want to have more keywords than just “hair”, “salon”, and “spa”. What if a potential client searches “straightening”, “facials” or “massages”? You don’t want to be left off of the results for their search because you haven’t considered how they might reference your business. Additionally, including geographic information is critical. Think about how you would search for a plumber if your kitchen sink starts to leak – “Plumber, Charlotte, NC”. As you think through clients will search for your business online, consider how they might refer to your area. Is it the city name, the county name, or a local neighborhood name?
Besides keywords, SEO techniques include link building, tags, comment writing, quality content management, and plenty of plugins. For more information about this topic visit the website of the SEO expert Jenny Munn or the SEO page for Google.
